Description

Sweet sampler for the forthcoming compilation of recordings from the Timeless jazz label....Chet Baker, with his signature fragile voice, cool toned trumpet playing and unmistakably recognizable charisma, became one of the most popular jazz artists of the 20th century. Born in Yale, Oklahoma, 1937, Chet picked up the trumpet at the age of 12. He made his name with Gerry Mulligan’s pianoless quartet in 1952, and formed the Chet Baker quartet soon afterwards. Between 1978 and 1988 he toured extensively through Europe, and recorded a wealth of material for the Dutch jazz label Timeless records. Dopeness Galore went through these recordings and found some unbelievable sessions, including his last live recording as a quartet in April 1988. Out of these recordings we made a “Finest” compilation. This sampler features “Sea Breeze” originally recorded in Monster, 1986 and while the studio recording from “I’m a fool to want you” will be featured on the compilation, this sampler exclusively holds the live version from the session in 1988. It can be argued that Chet was at his musical peak when he died in 1988, and it is recognized that some of his best recordings came from these last years. Chet Baker - "the maverick jazz trumpeter whom Charlie Parker once told Miles and Dizzy to watch out for.” Chet Baker’s Finest is also available as a CD album.
