Candi Staton, surely one of the greatest southern soul singers ever, returns with 'Who’s Hurting Now?' !Who’s Hurting Now? is Staton’s second collection of new recordings for Honest Jon’s. His Hands (2006) followed the worldwide success of HJ’s reissue of her classic Muscle Shoals sides in 2004, a one-two combination that caused the NME to remark: ‘Two years ago Honest Jon's put out her late '60s and early 70s recordings and it's the most unimpeachable collection of heartbreak you'll ever hear. This new album is just as good.’
Who’s Hurting Now? was recorded, like His Hands, with Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Silver Jews, Will Oldham) at his home studio in Nashville. Candi brought along a couple of veterans to the sessions (a guitarist from Cameo, and Mose Davis from Detroit funk legends The Fabulous Counts) and some of her own songs. The rest of the set takes in country and soul revives (a track each from Dan Penn and Mary Gauthier) and new tracks including Get Your Hands Dirty, specially written for Candi by Will Oldham, who also penned the title track of His Hands.
