Description

Recorded in 1957, a young Coltrane joins Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor for an inspired showcasing of three Trane originals amid a ballad by Alonzo Levister and a revved up version of Irving Berlin's “Soft Lights And Sweet Music”. Although Coltrane had only started recording a few years earlier, his style had already come into its own and, particularly on his originals like the bonus track “Slowtrane”, it is interesting to hear how Coltrane manages to break into and impose himself on one of the tightest rhythm sections in jazz, giving listeners a fleeting glimpse of what Trane had in store for the future.
