Ponty began his career at an early age, rejecting local styles in favor of the broad, other-worldly appeal of the left-of-center jazz and experimental aesthetics. He started his musical career in Frank Zappa’s band and eventually secured his place in history as one of the great Jazz violinists. Ponty’s music here, in the stunning acoustic masterpiece “Renaissance”---for which he recruited Ms. Patrice Rushen’s invaluable talents on the piano---and the eclectic and playful worldly-borrowings of “Mam’ Mai,” cannot be denied, written off or talked away.
