In 2017, musicians and regular collaborators Gigi Masin and Jonny Nash were invited to a residency at artist Xavier Veilhan’s “Studio Venezia” project at the Venice Biennale. For this immersive installation, Veilhan transformed the French Pavilion into a fully functioning recording studio, inviting artists to record original works during a series of residencies. Masin and Nash recorded a series of improvised compositions primarily for Piano and Guitar which were eventually edited down to 6 pieces, collectively entitled “Postcards From Nowhere”.
In 2018 Nash, who also runs the record label Melody As Truth, was approached by London-based design and branding consultancy Commission Studios with the proposal to collaborate on the production of a vinyl LP. After discussion with Masin, Nash suggested the Venice recordings as the basis for this collaboration and after sending the music, Commission developed the art direction of the project. This involved working in close collaboration with Paris based print atelier Imprimerie du Marais, renowned experts in colour setting, gilding and embossing techniques.
Both sides of the sleeve feature photographs by Luke Evans from a series based on psychotropic plants. To create the original images, Luke boiled Polaroids and peeled off the top layer. The top layer of both polaroids was the source of the image on each side of the sleeve, with multi-layer embossing utilised to replicate the bumps and contours of the original source. In addition CMYK was swapped with special fluorescent colours to bring out the psychotropic colours of the flowers. The fluorescent print additionally runs through the interior of the sleeve in a subtle gradient. Last of all, the album information, track listing and credits are black gloss hot foil printed on the spine and other two sides of the sleeve.
The inner sleeve is made from Gmund Cotton and features a blind embossing technique on both sides. Due to its 100% cotton content and its crisp quality, this paper is ideally suited to blind embossing. One side of the inner sleeve features a blind embossed copy of one of the polaroids, acting as echo or memory of the image on the outer sleeve. The other side features a brief text about the project. The vinyl edition is limited to 500 copies, only 300 of which are commercially for sale via the Melody As Truth bandcamp page and a select number of record stores.
