Elza Soares - Mas Que Nada
Samba legend Elza Soares, as featured on Gilles Peterson’s recent Sonzeira: 'Brasil Bam Bam Bam project, covers Jorge Ben’s classic ‘Mas Que Nada’. Tougher drums and a more jazzy tone on this version make this one for the dancefloor.
She is also famous for marrying the great Brazilian footballer Garrincha, who some rate as better than Pele.
Originally featured on her 'Samba's & Mais Samba's' LP on Odeon from 1970.
Elizabeth - Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente
Little is known about ‘Elizabeth’. She was apparently nicknamed ‘Gatinha do Mato’ (loosely translated as ‘Jungle Kitten’…). She was involved in the ‘Jovem Guarda’ movement.
We found this one at one of favourite, now defunct, spots ‘Tony’s Hits’ in Sao Paulo. The record was originally released on 7” on RGE in 1970.
