Description

Detroit drummer Roy Brooks was a force of nature, and this 1972 live date for Muse finds him leading a heavyweight band with unrelenting drive. The set bridges hard bop roots and freer impulses, opening with the surging intensity of 'The Free Slave' and the searching lines of 'Understanding'. On the flip, 'Will Pan's Walk' stretches into modal territory while 'Five For Max' nods to Max Roach in both rhythmic invention and political spirit. Brooks plays with a mix of fury and swing, locking tightly with Cecil McBee's bass as Woody Shaw and George Coleman push the frontline forward, lifted by Hugh Lawson's piano. What makes the session remarkable is its balance of structure and fire - the grooves stay grounded even as the music moves into more exploratory space, a testament to Brooks's conviction as both drummer and bandleader.
