Description
Manchester multi-instrumentalist Nat Birchall follows up last year’s universally acclaimed ‘Mysticism of Sound’ with his biggest tour de force so far on his Ancient Archive of Sound imprint.
Playing all instruments including tenor and soprano saxophones, bass clarinet, piano, bass, percussion and a Moroccan string instrument called the gunibri the UK jazz phenomenon evokes spirits known and unknown on this inspired spiritual jazz beauty.
More straight-forward than its ambient jazz-leaning predecessor, ‘Ancient Africa’ possesses a sound reminiscent of late sixties Impulse (think somewhere in between Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Gato Barbieri) but with a thoroughly timeless feel. Something the man himself likes to refer to as ‘ancient sounds from the future’. Beautiful stuff from start to finish. (RO)
