Description

The original soundtrack to Ola Balogun's legendary movie 'Black Goddess' from 1978. The film was written and directed by Balogun (recognized as one of Nigeria's most renowned directors) but shot and cast in Brazil. The soundtrack, Soundways deepest venture into experimental afro-jazz, was composed and produced by one of Nigerias most successful and original musicians Remi Kabaka (who has played with Steve Winwood, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney and Ginger Baker amongst others). The record was originally issued in both Nigeria and Brazil, but recorded in Lagos, using four of the Nigerian music scene's most innovative players: Remi Kabaka himself, alongside Biddy Wright, saxophonist Dele Okonkwo and Mono Mono frontman Joni Haastrup. Remi Kabaka (whose son now provides the vocals for Russell Hobbs from Gorillaz) is not the only one with an impressive musical CV. Joni Haastrup moved to England to play in Ginger Bakers Air Force and toured throughout Europe with the band before returning home to form Mono Mono. Soundway will be re-issuing two Mono Mono albums, Dawn of Awareness & Give A Beggar A Chance on LP this summer. Dele Okonkwo (one of the Nigerias most prominent saxophone players) and Biddy Wright made up the rest of the group. Biddy Wright (who also produced The Lijadu Sisters album Danger, a track from which featues on Soundways album The World Ends) moved to England and formed the Osibibisa inspired, Afro-rock band Akido, whose 1972, self-titled debut album was produced by Ronnie Lane (the bassist from The Faces). Biddy went onto to play bass in Ronnie Lanes country rock outfit Slim Chance touring through out Europe. The resulting soundtrack created by these prestigious musicians is a truly unique and experimental afro-jazz recording that has been out of print for many years, until now.
