Description

Oghene was an integral member of the Fela Anikulapo Kuti & Africa 70 band...this is real deal Afro beat business, spiritual and beautifully recorded... comes on a heavy pressing with super cool artwork...hold tight!Oghene Kologbo, born in Warri (Nigeria) in 1958, has been an integral member of the legendary Fela Kuti’s Africa ’70 for the whole life of the band. This made his tight tenor guitar playing be a fundamental presence in all the masterpiece records that defined the sound of Afrobeat and brought him to play with people of the likes of James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Lester Bowie, Paul McCartney, to name a few. Since he based his own life in Berlin in 1978, Kologbo continued to collaborate with Fela in Egypt ’80 and toured with King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen and Brenda Fosse, among many others. He also founded a number of successful bands such as Roots Anabo, and projects with Adé Bantu and Xavier Naidoo. Recorded in Berlin in 2007, this record marks Kologbo’s return to original, uncompromised, Afrobeat. Original in its concept, with rockin’ guitar solos and all tunes under 7 minutes, the vinyl features the best songs of the full-length CD released on Lion's Ark in September 2007 with a radically original artwork. Strictly in heavy (180gr.) pressing. SIDE A: 1- “Remember Fela Anikulapo Kuti” 6’23” The track that gives the title to the album, an unconditioned act of respect to the master of Afrobeat. 2- “Sniper” 5’09” A great theme, superb bass and guitar lines, fine tenor, trumpet and guitar solos for an instrumental number that’s a blast! 3- “L.C.I.A.” 5’50” Groove and fun for a number that jokes on the Babel that was left over by the colonial powers in Africa. SIDE B: 1- “We Day Suffa” 3’41” Featuring the fine singing of Pierre “Gorby” Mensah, a cool number with a funky edge. 2- “Afro Confusion” 3’24” Kicking drum grooves, a fine guitar and keyboard riff chase, tight and essential horn lines and an explosive baritone solo, another great instrumental piece. 3- “Change The System” 4’20” A light melody for a heavy message. Here Kologbo delivers also a fine solo on the tip of his toes for a relaxing closing. 4- “Open Your Eyes” 6’22” A call to everyone for expanding our experience beyond our material needs. Fat groove and nice horn lines complete the call-response between the lead and backing vocals for a definitive closing number.
