Description

1981 Brazilian Soul Funk Gem from soulman Hyldon, produced by the legendary jazz-funk band Azymuth with participation of Tim Maia.

This is the fourth album from Brazilian soulman Hyldon—singer and instrumentalist—who formed, alongside "Tim Maia" and "Cassiano", the legendary triad of Brazilian soul music in the 1970s.

Sabor de Amor (Continental, 1981) is perhaps his most consistent work. On it, he's backed once again by his trusted buddies "Azymuth" with a stellar lineup of musicians, including Alexandre Malheiros (bass), Ivan "Mamão" Conti (drums), Sérgio Carvalho (Hammond organ and Fender piano), Zé Roberto Bertrami (synthesizers), Antonio Adolfo (Yamaha piano), Márcio Montarroyos (flugelhorn), Renato Piau (guitar), Mário Monteiro "Picolé" (drums), and the Grupo Alma Brasileira (percussion).

Sabor de Amor's creation began uniquely in 1980. Hyldon reversed the typical album process: he assembled new songs and a trio of virtuosos, premiering them live with Tim Maia at Rio's Teatro Opinião before recording.

“Hyldon’s songwriting here is as inspired as ever, though, and Azymuth—as always—come through in spectacular fashion, particularly on the samba-disco club anthem “Vem Dançar O Samba” and the short but devastatingly effective “Amor Na Terra Do Berimbau.” Elsewhere, opening track “Vadiagem” is a boogie-fied gem that reminds us Earth WInd & Fire and there’s also the salsa-flavored “Cubana” and “São Conrado,” a spacey mid-tempo slow burner with vocal harmonies to die for.”
