Description

Deep space electronics, FX and drums from DJ Format and co... great little cover of Kraftwerk on here and wiggy library style trip out on the flip. Ltd Edition... Well recommended!!The A side 'Tour de Mars' is a cover of Kraftwerk's 'Tour de France' which soundtracks an imaginary journey into deep space, beyond the Moon and onwards to the red planet. Heavy drums, Moog synthesiser and spaced out FX supply a cosmic backdrop for the interplanetary message of goodwill delivered using the Vocoder. The B side 'Baker's Dozen' is heavily inspired by library music from the 60's and 70's; the kind of strange instrumental music you might have heard in the background of cult TV shows or adverts. Using the sound of a cork being popped from an empty bottle of gin as its main instrument the track is also inspired by the work of BBC Radiophonic Workshop composer John Baker, famous for taking everyday sounds and using them to create music. In this day of limited vinyl sales, The Simonsound defied the odds to sell almost all of the 1000 self-pressed copies of their debut 7" 'It's Just Begun". Played around the world by DJ's like Cut Chemist, DJ Muro, Edan and Florian Keller, it was even reportedly cut up by legendary Bronx DJ Rockin' Rob at a B-Boy event in NYC earlier this year prompting Grandmaster Caz to run to the turntables and excitedly demand to know the identity of the mystery version. High praise indeed! The Simonsound have over an albums worth of material recorded and are hoping that the release of their second self funded single will catch the ears of an interested record label in a position to do justice to their music and release it to a wider audience. Who are The Simonsound? The Simonsound is a sonic partnership consisting of Simon James and Matt Ford. Simon and Matt have been working together on various projects over the years. You may have heard their work together before on Matts albums under his guise as DJ Format, on which Simon assisted with production and mixed all vocals. The Simonsound is far from another DJ Format project. With broader musical tastes than just hip hop and funk, Simon and Matt started working on The Simonsound as an outlet for their more experimental offerings inspired by 60s psyche, pioneering electronics and music for TV and film. Words can be no substitute for the aural experience, but if you will have words, the duos first album offers an intriguing variety of sounds, including what the duo describe as 50s and 60s-inspired space music, mood music for film and TV, haunting vocal tracks, and switched-on cover versions of classics realised on the Moog synthesiser.
