After the resoundingly well-received debut release from Roots & Future, DJ Madd has been hard at work building more tough soundsystem beats for his fledgling imprint. A surefire bet to keep steppas moving throughout the summer festival season, 002 presents a couple of contrasting takes on the reggae dubstep sound with a vocal collaboration, “Homeland”, on the A side and the heavily dubbed-out dread vibrations of ‘Follow Dub’ on the flip. Marina P’s soulful verses dance over Madd’s tightly-coiled basslines on Homeland, delivering plenty of groove, dashes of colourful melody and skanking rhythms. The smoky, FX-heavy textures of Follow Dub take the vibe deeper, with pneumatic sub-bass pressure and percussive syncopations cutting through the haze; eyes-down dubwise flavours reminiscent of the early DMZ classic era.
