LINE UP:HAYVANLAR ALEMI
Hailing from the Turkish capital of Ankara and releasing on Sublime Frequencies, Hayvanlar Alemi are a killer hyper-colourful improvising psych-rock unit, consisting of old school friends Ozum Itez (electric guitar), Isik Sarihan (percussion) and Hazar Mutgan (bass), who successfully got themselves into everything psychedelic, exotic and adventurous.
TAPE JOCKEY'S SEBCAT (BE) & CINNAMOON (ES)
SEBCAT of the global Rebel Up! Soundclash collective (and bimonthly nights in OCCII) will open up his mysterious Maj Tahal cassette grotto to unveil many musical gems from allover the Indian subcontinent. Expect a fine selection of folkloric and disco pop from different Indian states, cinema songs from beyond Bollywood, sufi synthpop from Pakistan and digital folklore from the Nepali mountains. Dance, swirl, nod or listen anyway you like! DJ CINNAMOON (ES) Since 2005, the DJ Cinnamoon project has been compiling the best popular music from the Middle East. For this special lo-fi meeting we will enjoy a short audio-retrospective with original cassettes of Googoosh, Erkin Koray, Omar Souleyman, Haifa Wahbe and many other Turkish, Kurdish, Persian & Arabic extraordinary artists still unreleased for the Western audiences.
U.S. GIRLS
Though U.S. Girls’ Meghan Remy has declared her love for pop music and her desire to make some, in the past her ability to do so has been held back somewhat by both shoddy recording equipment and a disconnect between her definition of pop and that of the outside world. On her third full-length, U.S. Girls on KRAAK, she’s dealt with these two factors nicely, polishing away the excessive distortion and ramping up her love of ’60s girl group and ’90s r&b melodies just enough to make the experimentalism that’s at the core of her songs easier to appreciate. She signed to FatCat in late 2011, so another step towards polished pop may be in the works.
MIKE KOLDIN
Free floating ambient by the duo of Keimpe Koldijk and Michiel Klein. Improvised during a turning point in their lives they created four contemplative synthesizer pieces to immerse yourself in. Both sides start euphoric with seemingly static but slowly evolving tone clusters and settle down in melancholic territory with minor key chord progressions and scarse melodies.
